Norman Eisen v Sobranciach
Norman L. Eisen - americký veľvyslanec v Prahe má korene v Sobranciach (sú rodným mestom jeho matky)
"I have just completed an extraordinary week with eleven of my first
cousins and other relatives retracing our family’s roots through the
Czech Republic and Slovakia. Over the course of seven days we ranged
from my mother’s birthplace in eastern Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), to
her post-war home in Karlovy Vary (now the Czech Republic). We relived
a century of our family’s and of this nation’s life, including the rise
of the first Czechoslovak Republic, the Nazi occupation, the Iron
Curtain decades and the Velvet Revolution. We were consistently amazed
by the fact that the family had survived, thrived and was once again
part of the life of these lands. As my mom (who was with us via cell
phone and in spirit) put it, “the Nazis deported our family in cattle
cars, and now you have returned as the Ambassador of the mightiest
nation in the world!”
We started the trip in Slovakia. We got a warm
welcome from the mayor and officials of Sobrance, where my mother and
her seven siblings were born between the two world wars. Here is a
picture of the mayor and the people of the town in traditional garb
greeting us with bread and salt and a local beverage to drink a toast." (prevzaté z blogu Normana L.Eisena)
